ABOUT THE TEAM

Lydia Callis 2020 by chai fotos_edited.jpg

Lydia Callis (she/they)

Owner

info@SignNexus.com

Lydia Callis is an RID nationally certified American Sign Language Interpreter from 3 generations of Deaf family. American Sign Language is Lydia’s native language because her mother and three younger siblings are all profoundly Deaf. Growing up before there was adequate legal framework to protect the rights of the Deaf population, she witnessed the challenges her loved ones overcame every day just to access basic communication. She began interpreting to help her family communicate and to make sure she stayed fluent in the language of her roots.

LC Interpreting Services LLC (now known as SignNexus) was founded in 2014 with the goal of consistently providing high quality, culturally competent sign language interpreters. From decades of experience as an interpreter— first as a very young child, then later in the business world— Lydia knew the diverse needs of the Deaf population were not being met by large multi-language interpreting agencies. She wanted to make it simple for individuals and businesses to ensure they were hiring qualified Sign Language interpreters, while at the same time facilitating deeper, more meaningful relationships with the Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing community.

Lydia supports local and national groups to help empower people who are Deaf in their lives and careers, and works to educate businesses and organizations about inclusion practices for Deaf/DB/HoH professionals. She completed the DeafBlind Interpreting National Training and Resource Center DBII Cohort training program for tactile and protactile interpreting to better understand, honor, and effectively meet the distinct communication needs of those who are DeafBlind. As a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA) and being engaged to DeafBlind woman, Lydia is humbled to serve the expansive Deaf community, the interpreter community, and the hearing community through her work with SignNexus.

When she's not working, Lydia enjoys having adventures while spending time with friends. She is passionate about astrological and spiritual interpreting and exploring new ways to increase Deaf access to the metaphysical fields of study. Her personal interests include healthy living, yoga, and empowering others to commit to their life purpose.

PRESS

You will find below a list of articles and videos that highlight SignNexus interpreters and/or advocacy efforts. Our agency is grateful to be so involved with New York City’s vibrant Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing community!

ABOUT - PRESS

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

SignNexus recognizes that our work is primarily performed in Lenapehoking on the island of Mannahatta and that this is the ancestral unceded homeland of the Munsee Lenape peoples. The Lenape are a diasporic people that remain closely connected with this land and are its rightful stewards. Furthermore we acknowledge that New York City has one of the largest urban Native American and Indigenous populations in the United States. SignNexus recognizes these indigenous peoples, their displacement, dispossession, and their continued presence. Through this acknowledgment we reflect upon the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism, and express profound gratitude to those who have been living and working on this land from time immemorial.

LABOR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We recognize and acknowledge the labor upon which our country, state, and institutions are built. Much of the United States culture, economic growth, and development has been made possible by the labor of enslaved people who were kidnapped from the African continent; their ascendants who suffered the horrors of the transatlantic trafficking, chattel slavery, and Jim Crow; and the continued contribution of their survivors. We are indebted to their labor and sacrifice. We also acknowledge all immigrant and indigenous labor, including voluntary, involuntary, trafficked, forced, and undocumented peoples who contributed to the building of the country and continue to serve within our labor force. We recognize that our country is continuously defined, supported, and built upon by oppressed communities and peoples. We acknowledge labor inequities and the shared responsibility for combatting oppressive systems in our daily work.
